Abstract

Hospital wastewater treatment using a biological process that is followed by the chlorination
process still have an impact on the receiving water body (river) as a result of residual chlorine. On the
other hand, ozonation (ozone gas use) in hospital waste water treatment is rarely used while ozone gas
has several advantages in reducing the concentration of pollutants than chlorine gas. The research
objective was to determine the performance of the reactor packed in treatment of hospital wastewater,
particularly in reducing the concentration of pollutants (BOD, COD, Ammonia-free, Phenol, E.coli and
Salmonella typhoid). The experiment is conducted by flowing the wastewater into the reactor containing
the packing then contacted with ozone gas in countercurrent flow. The experimental variables used were
ozone dosage (10, 15, and 20 ppm), ozone contact time (1, 2, and 3 min) and ozonation time of 30
minutes. By measuring the concentration of pollutants in the influent and effluent of the reactor so that to
obtain the magnitude of decrease in concentration of pollutants that show the performance of the ozone
reactor. The experimental results show that the reactor packed has excellent performance in hospital
wastewater ozonation, where at ozone dosage of 15 ppm, contact time of ozone of 3 minutes and time of
ozonation of 20 minutes can decrease the concentration of BOD, COD, Ammonia- free, Phenol, E.coli
and Salmonella typhus were 97%, 98%, 97%, 96%, 100%, and 100%, respectively.
