Evaluasi Kinerja Modifikasi Alat Direct Shear pada Pengujian Kuat Geser Tack Coat

Abstract

The road construction  strength will decrease due to increase  in traffic load and/or the
construction service life runs out. To improve pavement strength, new layer should be added on the old
layer. Adhesive layer called tack coat should be applied to forms a strong unity between old and new
layer. Currently Indonesia has no tack coat testing standard, either equipment nor required shear stress.
Therefore, a device is needed for measuring tack coat shear strength. The problems of this research are:
how to modify soil direct shear device, to be used for measuring tack coat shear strength, and how to
measure the performance of modified device. Furthermore, this study aims to modify soil direct shear
device, that can measure tack coat shear strength, and to measure the performance of modified device.
This research is a laboratory study with some modifications to  direct shear divice, ie: proving ring,
specimen holder, hanging load, sliding box driver handle. The results show, the modified device works
well. Shear strength value of flexible and composite pavement up to 174,58kg and 130,94kg respectively.
Meanwhile,  device performance shows that vehicle wheel load cannot be represented on modified tack
coat shear strength device,  so further research is required.
